“POVERTY AND VIOLENCE AGAINST OLDER WOMEN”

COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN 69: BEIJING + 30

NGO FORUM

This virtual parallel event at the CSW69/Beijing+30 will address poverty and violence among older Indigenous women, grandmothers raising HIV-affected orphans, and widows. Strengths and resilience, as well as the need for human rights protections, are discussed.

Challenges and barriers to achieving the stated goals of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for women of all ages, including eliminating poverty and violence, are explored, along with recommendations for needed action.

The context of the panel discussion is through the lens of older women in communities struggling with the challenges of economic security in the face of changing climate and broader societal issues, as well as the need to protect and care for children affected by HIV. Needed governmental protections are highlighted, and remedies are presented.
